As a follow-on Round to the Senior Maths Challenge, the British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO) Round 1 are 3.5 hour Olympiad consisting of six Olympiad style problems.

When registering multiple students, complete a separate registration form for each student, and ensure that you use a different email for each student.

It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

 

The problems on the BMO are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

Competition format

The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 3.5 hour challenge, consisting of six Olympiad style problems.

Invitation-only competition

The top approximately 1,000 participants in the Senior Mathematical Challenge (UKSMC) will be invited to take part in the first round of the British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO1). Students from the UK education system who have not received invitations can also participate by paying a substantial entry fee and be qualified.

To qualify for the BMO1, students must either be eligible for a UK passport, and/or will have studied in the UK for at least three years before they leave school. 

Otherwise, student can take part in BMO1, but with a discretionary entry. ​

Awards

  • Certificate of Distinction: Students who rank in the top 25% in both BMO1 and BMO2 will receive this award.

  • Certificate of Qualification: The remaining students will be eligible for this award.

Note: Only BMO1 will recognize approximately the top 100 high-scoring students with Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards in a 1:2:3 ratio; discretionary awards. Non-invited participants are eligible only for the Certificate of Distinction.
