What is Bebras Challenge

Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge is a fun and engaging challenge for students in Years 4 to 13. It is an international challenge that involves over 2.9 million students from 60 countries.  

Coding skills are not required to complete the Bebras Challenge

The Challenge is coordinated by the International Bebras Committee which meets annually to assess potential questions and share resources.

Bebras Australia began in 2014 and was delivered by CSIRO until 2023. From 2024, the AMT is delivering the Bebras Challenge in Australia.

27 April 2025 (Sunday)

  • 19:00-19:45 (NZ time)

(or 19:00-20:00 for Years 3 and 4 only)
 

  • 17:00-17:45 (Sydney time, NZ-2)

(or 17:00-18:00 for Years 3 and 4 only)

  • 15:00-15:45 (Perth / Beijing time, NZ-4)

(or 15:00-16:00 for Years 3 and 4 only)

Challenge Format

Online at home. 

Year Groups

The challenge is available for five divisions this year (equivalent to NZ year):

Middle Primary – NZ Years 4 and 5
Upper Primary – NZ Years 6 and 7
Junior – NZ Years 8 and 9
Intermediate – NZ Years 10 and 11
Senior – NZ Years 12 and 13

Question and Answer Format

15 questions – combination of multiple choice, integer and interactive responses.

Scoring System

The level of difficulty of a question determines how it will be scored.  

Easy questions are worth 6 marks, medium questions are worth 9 marks, and hard questions are worth 12 marks.  

There are 15 questions with the highest possible score being 135 marks. 

Incorrect and unanswered questions are awarded zero points.

Hard

12 marks each

0 marks for each incorrect and unanswered question
